Everest climbers to protest at UN HQ

Sunday - 04th April 2010

KATHMANDU: A group of Mt Everest Summiteers plan to protest in front of the UN Headquarters in New York on May 21, demanding immediate actions to curb the problems facing the fast melting Himalayas due to the impact of climate change. Many of the protesters will include those who had staged a march in front of the Danish parliament in Copenhagen on December 11 drawing attention of over 120 Heads of states and Governments assembled during the climate summit towards the issues of climate change and the mountains.
Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation which had coordinated the event, will also coordinate the New York protests. “That was the beginning. We have already seen the Copenhagen meeting ended up without any results. Being the most vulnerable country due to the climate change there is need for constant pressure to make our voice heard during the next meeting in Mexico. So we are going to organise the march in front of UN HQ which coordinates the global climate change negotiations,” said Deepak Bohara, Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation.
The UN is coordinating the global negotiations on climate change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 16th Conference of Parties (COP-16) is going to be held in Mexico on December this year.
Nepal had conducted historic Everest base camp Cabinet meeting in Kalapatthar on December 4 to draw global concern on the issues of climate change and melting of the Himalayas.
Studies have shown that the melting of the ice of the Himalayas has been increasing in the recent years as a result of the global warming. The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) will coordinate the event from here. A memo will be handed over to the
UN Secretary General after
the event.
