Apa's bid to outstrip himself

Tuesday - 06th April 2010

KATHMANDU: It seems, every time Apa Sherpa reached the top of the world, the majesty of Mt Everest whetted his appetite for more expeditions.
Apa, who has already scaled the world’s highest peak a record 19 times, now is all set to clinch another feat. Apa h as geared up to ascend Mt Everest 20th times with a Climate Change message on top of Everest.
Termed a crusade against Climate Change in the Himalayas, Apa will carry a banner that reads ‘You Heard Our Voice, Now Raise Yours - We Can Stop Climate Change In The Himalayas’ on the top of the world.
WWF handed over the banner to Apa today at a function in Kathmandu. Apa will be accompanied by
two-time Everest Summiteer and fellow Climate Ambassador Dawa Steven Sherpa in the Eco Everest Expedition, stated a press release issued by WWF today.
The event is part of WWF’s Climate for Life Campaign which extensively raised the issue of impacts of Climate Change in the Himalayas last year in the run up to Copenhagen COP 15 Summit, starting with Apa Sherpa taking the first Climate Change banner to the Everest Summit and sending a grave message to the world
about the impacts of global warming on the Himalayas, added the release.
Climate for Life is a Campaign spearheaded by WWF Nepal to raise the profile of the Himalayas in the global climate debate in collaboration with Nepal government, its development partners, and others.
It was Apa and Dawa’s
active participation in
various events of the campaign, which ultimately drew the attention
towards Himalayas in the Global Climate Debate.
This year, Apa and Dawa are continuing their work by joining a Finnish national Carina Raiha who is the first Finnish woman attempting to climb Everest.
Together these Ambassadors will use their journeys to talk about Climate Change and its impacts on our Himalayan eco-system, added the release.
