'Nepali Mela' organised in UK'

Wednesday - 01st September 2010

A colourful Nepali Mela was organised at Richmond, UK on Saturday with the enthusiastic participation of thousands of Nepalese attired in their ethnic dresses.

A total of 19 organisations based in UK took part in the rally at the second 'Nepali Mela' organised by the Tamudhee UK at the Richmond Athletics Ground showcasing unique Nepali culture and traditions.

Addressing the function, Nepali ambassador to UK Dr Suresh Chandra Chalise, said at a time when Nepal was going to observe Nepal Tourism Year 2011, such functions helped introduce Nepal to the British communities and further strengthen excellent relations between the two countries.

Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes said the 'mela' had given him an opportunity to learn about Nepal and Nepali culture. "We know Nepal as a country of Mt Everest and brave Gurkhas. We love Nepalese a lot," he added.

Mayor of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Councillor David Marlow, said he was so happy to be able to attend the event. He said he was pleased to see that Nepali diaspora was becoming an active part of the multi-cultural British society.

President of the Tamudhee UK, Suba Singh Gurung, said the objective of the 'Nepali Mela' was to celebrate Nepal's rich culture and traditions and encourage younger people to be proud of their culture. "We have got very positive response from people of Britain and local authorities while organising this event," he added.

Khagendra Thapa Magar, one of the smallest persons in the world, was main attraction at the event. Similarly, Tamu Youth team organised a concert targeting youngsters.

On the occasion, Ambassador Chalise handed over 'Ambassador Running Cup' to the president of Tamudhee UK, which is awarded to the best team taking part in the 'Mela.' Tamudhee Reading chapter bagged this year's 'Ambassador Running Cup' along with a cash reward of 500 pounds.

Coordinator of the event, Chitra Gurung, said there were a total of 33 stalls showcasing their products and services at the 'mela.' He said some 6,000 Nepalese residing in the UK as well as some British citizens took part in the event. nepalnews.com
