Collective efforts is a must to promote mountain tourism: Tourism Minister

Wednesday - 15th September 2010

Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Sarat Singh Bhandari has on Tuesday expressed that there should be collective efforts for the management as well as to promote mountain tourism in the country.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) held in the capital, Bhandari said that as Nepal's mountains have played an important role to make Nepal a popular tourist destination internationally, Nepal should focus on the management of mountain peaks.

He also said that all the concerned bodies should work together for the development of mountaineering in the country and also urged the NMA to develop and promote mountain tourism.

On the same occasion, Kishore Thapa, secretary of the Ministry for Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) said that as NMA has been authorised to collect royalties for climbing mountains, it should take more initiatives in managing and enhancing mountain tourism.

He also assured that the government is ready to support the association and also urged the association to explore new mountaineering and trekking destination.

Zimba Zangbu Sherpa, president of NMA, also requested the government to permit the association for more trekking peaks and also assured that the association will work together in promoting and managing mountain tourism.

Nima Nuru Sherpa, first vice-president of NMA, also expressed that due to lack of budget, NMA failed to carry out its responsibilities.

Bhandari also urged all the general people and private sector to help make Nepal Tourism Year 2011 (NTY-2011) campaign a success. nepalnews.com
