Everest in October after 10 years

KATHMANDU: Eric Larsen successfully climbed Mount Everest in the month of October, the first to do so in ten years during this month. A report submitted by the Liasion Officer and Handling Agency stated that Larsen along with five members of High Altitude Workers (HAW) succeeded in climbing Mount Everest on October 15.

The Nepali HAW members who climbed the peak during this season were Tshering Dorje Sherpa, Nima Dorje Tamang, Pasang Temba Sherpa, Dawa Gelzen Sherpa and Pasang Dawa Sherpa. The expedition team comprising of one member was permitted to climb to the height of 8,848 meters from the normal route for a period of seventy-five days, Himalayan Trailblazer Trekking and Expedition Pvt Ltd was the handling agency for the expedition.

“There have been 535 permits that have been released by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and the number of climbers has definitely increased this season,” said Jinesh Sinduraker, Chief Administrative Officer of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Nepal Mountaineering Association has been going all out promoting Nepal Tourism Year 2011 and is also organising a conference of 170 members for Union of International Alpine Association in October next year.

“The president of NMA Zimba Zangbu Sherpa was just in Italy confirming the conference which is has been scheduled on October 5-8 next year in Nepal, along with this documentaries on trekking and mountaineering are being showcased in various countries,”he added.

According to him keeping in mind that next year being NTY 2011, mountaineering is a key component for it. “It is likely that the number of trekkers will definitely increase,” he said, adding that Nepal Mountaineering Association that was established in 1973 is promoting mountaineering as well as help out local families who are involved in expeditions, which could prove to be dangerous.
