KATHMANDU: Inaugurating the three-day Mandala Sadak Mahotsav at Thamel in the Capital today, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Sharat Singh Bhandari said that Thamel’s image should be protected as the place is reflection of the country’s tourism industry. “Nepal Tourism Year 2011 has been conceived to tell the people that tourism is the mainstay of our economy,” he said.
Tourism sector has developed even in an unfavourable environment through coordination between the private sector and the government. In the fair, unique and finest tourism products have been put on display.
Photos of canoeing and rafting, handicrafts, cultural programmes, Nepali costumes and entertainment programmes are some of the attractions.
Chairman of Thamel Tourism Development Council Tejendra Shrestha said that Mandela Street has been a tourism attraction of Thamel and that it should be made a model city centre of the country.
Thamel Development Council, Himalayan Rescue Association and local tourism organisations have together organised the festival.
