KATHMANDU: Seventh National Tourism Council meeting under the leadership of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal formed a five-member Nepal Tourism Year (NTY) 2011 Committee on October 25.
Secretaries from Home Ministry, Finance Ministry, Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA), Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Tourism Board Prachanda Man Shrestha, and Coordinator of NTY-2011 Coordinating Committee are part of the five-member committee.
The committee will study and observe major requirements for the tourism year and forward a proposal to the Prime Minister for further action.
According to the Dhurba Narayan Shrestha, member of the NTY Coordinating Committee for NTY 2011, five areas have been selected as major target areas for immediate focus in order to enhance the scope for tourism year’s success.
The five main target areas are Sanitation and Clean Environment, Proper Airport Management, Hassle Free Road Transportation, Purchase of two new aircraft for Nepal Airlines Corporation, and Operation of express bus service from and to major tourist destinations both for international and domestic tourists.
Representatives from the private sector expressed their frustration over the delay caused in the purchase of new aircraft by Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC).
However, the PM focused on the requirement of new aircraft for the success of NTY 2011.
Last, National Tourism Council after a break of ten years had conducted its sixth meeting on November 20, 2009.
The council was constituted on May 25, 1992 with a view to developing tourism as the backbone of the national economy and to maintain coordination and harmony among various agencies related to the tourism industry.
The main activity of the council is to solve problems faced by the tourism sector, issuing policy guidelines and reviewing pertinent plans and programmes. National Tourism Council’s first meeting was held on December 1, 1992, second was on June 12, 1994, third on June 12, 1995, fourth on December 26, 1997 and the fifth meeting was conducted on December 20, 1999.
