Wonders of Mera Peak climbing

Unlike the popular Sagarmatha National Park, your Mera Peak adventure takes you deep into the untouched wilderness of the Makalu Barun National Park. The journey begins from Ningsow (2,863 m/9,394 ft) to Chhatra Khola (2,800 m/9,187 ft), offering a chance to immerse yourself in the daily lifestyle of the locals and explore their rich cultural heritage.

The Sherpas are one of the ethnic groups that reside along the Mera Peak route. Their warm hospitality and distinct way of life make this experience all the more special. Traversing opposite the mainstream EBC trail allows you to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the pristine wilderness of the region. Trekking is an essential part of the Mera Peak climb, allowing you ample time to acclimatize and adjust to the environment.

A rest day at Khare gives you the opportunity to prepare for the climb ahead, where you'll receive pre-climbing training from your experienced team leader to boost your confidence. From Khare, you'll push towards Mera High Camp (5,780 m/18,964 ft), before making the final ascent to the summit.

With one of the most straightforward climbing routes in the region, you'll primarily be walking on thick snow slopes while following the footsteps of your experienced team leader. Scaling Mera Peak offers an excellent opportunity for novice climbers to gain valuable experience in high-altitude mountaineering.

Mera Peak climbing route

During our Mera Peak expedition, we set up a high camp at an altitude of 5,780 meters or 18,964 feet. This strategic location makes our summit push shorter and more manageable. Our Mera Peak High Camp is situated on a rocky shelf behind a large vertical rock, providing us with some much-needed protection and shelter from the harsh mountain environment.

From our high camp, we will follow the northern route toward the summit, carefully managing our pace to conserve our energy and ensure our safety. Throughout the climb, we'll witness astonishing views of the surrounding mountains, which will serve as a constant source of inspiration and motivation.

Mera peak pre-climbing training

Pre-climbing training for Mera Peak will prepare you for the challenging ascent ahead. Our guides will provide you with a comprehensive training program that covers various climbing skills, including ice climbing and the proper use of crampons and other essential mountain gear.

Through these training sessions, you will learn important techniques for navigating tricky terrain, managing equipment, and assessing potential hazards. You'll also gain a greater understanding of how to conserve your energy and stay mentally focused throughout the climb.

        Useful Information

        Mera Peak climbing difficulty

From a technical standpoint, Mera Peak presents a more manageable climbing challenge than either Island Peak or Lobuche Peak. However, at a height higher than any other trekking peak in Nepal, Mera Peak is still a formidable climb. The extreme exposure to sun, wind, and altitude, combined with the harsh, snowy terrain of the Himalayas, make Mera Peak climbing a highly demanding physical feat.

The ascent follows a straight path up a glacier, with slopes that never exceed 30 degrees, and ropes are fixed for added safety. Basic climbing gear, such as crampons and ice axes, is required for the climb. The journey to the top of Mera Peak is divided into three phases: Phase I involves trekking to the base camp, Phase II is the actual climbing period, and Phase III encompasses trekking back to Lukla.

Distance: Mera Peak climbing involves trekking a distance of approximately 125 kilometers, depending on the route taken

Terrain: Traverse across dense forests & mountain passes and navigate through rushing rivers, followed by steep and rocky moraines of the Dig Glacier. As for the climbing difficulty level, Mera Peak is considered an Alpine PD climb. The slopes never exceed 30 degrees, and ropes are fixed for safety during the ascent.

Altitude sickness: Given the high elevation of Mera peak climbing, there is an obvious risk of altitude sickness during the journey. All we can do is take preventive measures to avoid it. Be aware of symptoms like headache, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, and nausea. We take ample acclimatization days along with regular breaks and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated to avoid altitude sickness during the Mera peak climbing.

Accommodation & meals during the Mera Peak climbing

During the Mera Peak trekking, you will stay overnight in the guesthouses along the trail. The guesthouse is well-maintained and provides a warm and comfortable place to rest after a long day of trekking. Each guest house has a central communal area with a stove, which provides warmth and a place to socialize with other climbers.

The bedrooms are typically small and unheated. Each comes with two beds and mattresses, blankets, and pillows. Trekkers will need to bring their own sleeping bags to stay warm at night. Some of the lodges still use the infamous ‘drop’ toilets, while most now have flush systems, ensuring a more comfortable experience for climbers. At Mera Peak high camp, you'll be staying in alpine tents.

You can expect a variety of good quality food, including local Nepali and Sherpa dishes as well as Western recipes. The local Dal Bhat, thukpa, and Momos are highly recommended. Burgers and chips are common in Lukla. They are less likely to be found on the Mera Peak trail, as this area is not as developed or busy as the main trail north of Lukla to Everest.

        Mera Peak climbing season

Plan your Mera Peak climbing adventure during Autumn or Spring to ensure optimal weather conditions, comfortable temperatures, and breathtaking views. Check the Mera Peak weather forecast and consult with local guides before embarking on any trekking or climbing adventure in Nepal to ensure safety and avoid any unforeseen circumstances.

With stable temperatures and low chances of precipitation, Autumn and Spring in Nepal offer the most stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. The clear skies during these seasons provide unobstructed views of the snow-capped peaks and lush valleys. The climate during spring and autumn is generally dry, which makes the trekking trails more accessible.

On the other hand, Winter in Nepal has very cold temperatures and sees heavy snowfall, which can make trekking and climbing extremely difficult and dangerous. Low temperatures can also cause frostbite and hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken. Similarly, the Monsoon in Nepal is known for its heavy rainfall and high humidity, which can make trekking trails slippery and muddy. The rainfall can also cause landslides and floods in certain areas, which can be life-threatening for adventurers.

        Mera Peak climbing tips

        • Travel Insurance: Buy travel insurance that covers high-altitude climbing, emergency medical expenses, and air evacuation. Mera peak climbing is an adventure in a very remote area with no road connection or health facilities. In case of any injury or emergency during the climbing, we have to air evacuate you to a hospital in Nepal. And it requires travel insurance to cover any expenses.

        • Luggage: Lightweight and waterproof luggage is essential for Mera Peak climbing, so we use duffle bags. Pack only necessary items and avoid overpacking. You can store any extra clothes and suitcases in our office. Just make sure to lock it properly. We have a 10kg weight limit for the duffle bag and a 5kg weight limit for the backpack for each participant.

        • Travel Visa: A tourist visa is required to enter Nepal. It can be obtained on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport or through the Nepalese embassy in your home country. Check your country's visa eligibility for an on-arrival visa before leaving your country as some countries are not qualified for an on-arrival visa in Nepal.

        • Currency & ATM: The Nepalese rupee (NPR) is the official currency. ATMs are available in major cities, but it is recommended to carry enough cash for remote areas. There is no ATM on the Mera Peak route, so withdraw ample Nepali cash to use during the Mera Peak climbing venture.

        • Charging and Internet: Charging facilities and Wi-Fi are available at guesthouses along the trekking trail, but it may come at an additional cost. These expenses are not covered in our Mera peak climbing cost, so you have to bear it by yourself.

        • Personal Expenses: Additional expenses like snacks, bottled water, and hot showers can add up during the trek. It is recommended to have some extra cash for such expenses.

        • Tips: It is customary to tip guides and porters in Nepal. The amount can vary based on the quality of service provided, but a general rule of thumb is to tip 10-15% of the total cost.
