I have walked many beautiful trails, but few have touched my heart like the Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang trek in Nepal. Coming from Germany, I have always loved the Himalayas, not just for their huge mountains but for the quiet and deep spirit they hold. This journey was more than just a hike. It was a special experience filled with culture, traditions, and amazing natural beauty.
My name is Thilo Hueber. Three years ago, my group and I took this trek with the help of A1 Excursion Adventure. It became one of the most life-changing trips I have ever taken.
Now, I want to share my memories from that 25-day adventure through Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang. This remote trek in Nepal challenged our strength, patience, and sense of wonder. It was a true escape into the hidden parts of the Himalayas.
Why I Chose the Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang Trek for a Himalayan Adventure
Nepal has been on my travel list for a long time. While places like Everest and Annapurna are very popular, I wanted to find a quieter and more mysterious path. I wanted a trek that was more remote and full of adventure. A place less visited by travelers. That is why I chose the Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang trek. This route is famous for its ancient trade paths, Tibetan Buddhist and Bon monasteries, and some of the most stunning and Breathtaking landscapes on Earth.

Preparing for a High Altitude Trek in Remote Nepal: Endurance Training and Support from A1 Excursion Adventure
Trekking to the Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang is not an easy trip. It needs both mental and physical preparation. Even though I was fairly fit, I knew this trek would be harder than regular weekend walks or gym workouts. Before the trip, I trained by doing long walks, hiking hills, and cardio exercises. I even practiced carrying a heavy backpack to get ready. This training helped a lot. When the trek started, I felt not just ready, but excited.
What made the trip even better was the great help from A1 Excursion Adventure. They took care of every detail with care and skill. Getting special permits for Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang is not simple because both areas are restricted. But A1 Excursion Adventure managed everything quickly and smoothly.
They also arranged a local guide, organized flights and transport, booked nice teahouses to stay in, and helped me get the right gear for the different parts of the trek. From start to the end, everything was easy and well planned. When I arrived in Kathmandu, I didn’t have to worry about anything. Everything was ready for me to start the adventure of a lifetime.

Flying to Nepalgunj and Juphal: Gateways to Upper Dolpo Region
We flew to Nepalgunj, a hot and humid city that brought us closer to Dolpo. It was my first time flying in Nepal. From the busy Tribhuvan Airport to the warm plains of western Nepal, I experienced the country’s incredible diversity. Nepalgunj was dusty and full of energy, the last town before entering the wild Dolpo region.
Beginning the Journey, Touching Down in Dolpo
From Nepalgunj, we took a small plane that flew near the mountain ridges before landing at Juphal Airport in the lower Dolpo region. Arriving in Juphal felt like stepping back in time.
